The River Bookshop is located in a historical building within the small town of Amherstburg. Not only is the River Bookshop the town’s only bookshop — it is a community space for special events, idea sharing, and local meetings on arts & culture.

ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVANCY OF ONTARIO
PETER STOKES RESTORATION AWARD

With the closest bookstore over 30km away, the River Bookshop is a local resource for exploration, a catalyst for community engagement and exchange, and a reminder that books are the heart of culture.

Central to the Town’s identity, the architecture of the building, dating back to 1885 (only a few years after the official founding of the town), was maintained with a careful renovation / restoration of the building façade.

The material palette was developed to cleanly showcase colourful books, art and gifts, and to create a warm and welcoming space, inviting guests to stay as long as they desire. Several nooks are peppered throughout the store — creating pockets of space for children and adults of all ages to settle into a corner and lose themselves in a good book.
